Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)

Who are eligible for Part A:

  • Those who turn 65 years of age and have worked at least 10 years for which you paid Medicare taxes.
  • Those who are under 65 and who are receiving disability benefits from Social Security or certain disability benefits from the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) for 24 months.
  • Those who have Lou Gehrig’s disease will qualify the month your disability benefits begin.
  • Those who live in Puerto Rico and get benefits from Social Security or the RRB.

What’s covered in general under Part A:

  • Hospital care
    • Inpatient hospital care
    • Skilled nursing facility care
    • Long-term care hospitals
  • Skilled nursing facility care
  • Nursing home care (as long as custodial care isn’t the only care you need)
  • Hospice
  • Home health services

How much does Part A cost:

  • Part A Premium:
    • Usually Premium-free coverage if you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes for 30+ quarters while working.
    • If you paid Medicare taxes for less than 30 quarters, the standard Part A premium is $413.
    • If you paid Medicare taxes for 30-39 quarters, the standard Part A premium is $227.
  • Part A Hospital Deductible & Coinsurance: You pay:
    • $1,316 deductible for each benefit period
    • Days 1-60: $0 coinsurance for each benefit period
    • Days 61-90: $329 coinsurance per day of each benefit period
    • Days 91 and beyond: $658 coinsurance per each “lifetime reserve day” after day 90 for each benefit period (up to 60 days over your lifetime)
    • Beyond lifetime reserve days: all costs
